Bringing the Sand Inside Our Home: The Benefits of Kinetic Sand Sensory Play

Our toddler misses the beach. She’s been asking us when the Covid-19 virus will be gone so she can finally swim and play in Boracay (the last beach she went to). 😂🏖

Though I patiently explain to her why we can’t go to the beach or any other public place yet, I know in my heart that I will do anything to grant our little girl’s simple wish…even if that means bringing the beach inside our home. 😄

Little Tash’s Boracay getaway in 2019

I learned about kinetic sand during one of our playdates with my good friend Dette’s children. The kids had fun playing with it. After that, the Boracay sand-like toy had been part of my daughter’s wish list.

Since we can’t bring our daughter to the beach just yet, the closest thing to sandcastle fun that we can give her right now is playing with kinetic sand.

Benefits of Kinetic Sand Play

I thought that playing with kinetic sand was just good for taking boredom out of the picture. What I didn’t realize was that kinetic sand can do so much for a child’s development.

In fact, occupational therapists have found that kinetic sand activity offers several benefits not just for kids but even for adults.

  • Improve fine motor skills
  • Encourages creative thinking
  • Provides sensory processing
  • Promotes sense of calm
  • Deep pressure can help the brain organize

Learning through fun sensory play

While I know that academic learning is important, I choose to let our three-year-old learn through sensory play. At her age, I want her to enjoy being a toddler by playing as much as she can. 😉Kunsintidor mommy here! High five!🤚🏻

Despite that, I believe little Tash is learning so much from every play session. We were just surprised that one day she can recognize numbers without me turning into school principal mode. 🤓

Sensory play refers to an activity that stimulates a child’s different senses — touch, smell, taste, sight, hearing. It also promotes the use of movement and balance.

Playing with kinetic sand is one example of sensory play that children can enjoy and learn from. It is also a fun bonding activity for the family.

Where to get kinetic sand

You can buy kinetic sand from online toy stores or online sellers. As we wanted to #supportlocalbusinesses, we bought ours for around P400 from an online mommy seller on Facebook.

You can also DIY your child’s kinetic sand. 😎 Check out this DIY instructions from Parenting Chaos.

Just a warning! Since kinetic sand is…sand, be ready for messy floors and tables. 🤪 While it is definitely easier to clean compared to playdough because the sand doesn’t stick to the floor or bedsheets, it still can be messy at some point. 😅

But I was more than ready for this colorful mess right inside our home! Let a child be a child. A messy home can be cleaned. The learning and enjoyment of our child is what matters. ❤️❤️
